SFW “DESIGNER OF THE YEAR” SATURDAY AT SMOCA!

scottsdalefashionweeklogo

Ladies and Corbin, it’s going to be one busy, busy weekend in the Valley! Scottsdale Fashion Week announced today their finalists for the coveted “Designer of the Year” competition. This year’s event will be held this Saturday, October 3rd at 10:00 p.m. at SMoCA (Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Arts). The designers to showcase their talents are:

Italia Rocks Couture by Natalia Acosta
Siobhan by Elizabeth Albert
Jennyvi Dizon Couture
Barking Fire and Lourdes by Patricia Fistes-Adams
AGA Couture by Alex Garcia
Vickilyn’s Closet by Victorialyn McCarthy
iuk iuk by Alina Samasiuk
Nostalgic Boutique by Rebecca Turley
Arte Puro by Emilie Uriarte and Leonor Aispuro
RAW by Amelia Walsh

Between October 4 and 11, the general public can help select the winner by voting at scottsdalefashionweek.azcentral.com. The people’s choice finalists will be reviewed by the judging panel and the 2009 Designer of the Year will be announced October 16. My dear friend and Designer of the Year Coordinator, Angela Johnson said, “This is an up close opportunity for the public to see the work of these talented local designers in person. That way when they vote for their favorite designer on the azcentral website, they will have actually seen the designs up close and are making an informed decision.” The winner will receive his or her own fashion show on the Scottsdale Fashion Week SouthBridge Runway on November 7 at 10:00 p.m. Tickets for the show are $15 at the door and can be purchased in advance by calling 480-994-ARTS (2787).

The fabulous ensemble of judges for this year’s competition include John Michael Capaldi, Canal magazine advertising and marketing director; Kate Cavaliere Birchler, Scottsdale Fashion Square & Biltmore Fashion Park senior marketing manager; Nick Cave, School of the Art Institute of Chicago Fashion Design Faculty and contemporary artist; Megan Finnerty, Arizona Republic nightlife editor; Nadia Mustafa, national style journalist; and Dennita Sewell, Phoenix Art Museum fashion curator.

When asked about the aspiring designers Sewell summarized the judged field by observing, “It is exciting to see such a diverse range of designs and creative talent germinating in the Phoenix area. The designers show a diversity of inspirations ranging from 1950s American design to a geometrically based dress that can be worn eight different ways.”

Scottsdale Fashion Week is November 5, 6 and 7. Tickets can be purchased at www.scottsdalefashionweek.com and from the 2009 Scottsdale Fashion Week charity partners – Childhelp, Cystic Fibrosis, Fresh Start Women’s Foundation, and Make-A-Wish Foundation. They range from $25 for general admission to $200 for an All Evening Premium show pass.

In total the Scottsdale Waterfront and SouthBridge will host over two-dozen runway shows. The Main Runway will showcase leading fashion designers and will be located at the Scottsdale Waterfront on Marshall Way south of Camelback Road. The outdoor SouthBridge Runway will feature up-and-coming designers and will be located across the Arizona Canal.
